#2: Patek Philippe Calibre 89 – $5.1 million

Patek Philippe is probably THE  biggest name in luxury watchmaking, and it’s no surprise that the company holds the top two spots in the “most expensive watch of all time” category, starting with the Patek Philippe Calibre 89 at #2.

The Patek Philippe Calibre 89 was designed with a very explicit purpose – to be the most complicated watch ever produced.

Patek Philippe accomplished what they set out to do, creating the Calibre 89 with 33 complications – many features which you’d probably never need or understand unless you were a master watchmaker or mechanical engineer.

The Calibre 89 took nine engineers five years of research to conceptualize, and then another four years to build.

The complications included are so many that we cannot possibly list them all here, but we’ll just say that this watch can do nearly everything…except connect to bluetooth or work with wifi.

#1: Henry Graves’ Patek Philippe SuperComplication – $24.1 million

At $24.1 million, the most expensive watch in the history of mankind is this Patek Philippe SuperComplication, which was custom made by Patek Philippe for wealthy American banker Henry Graves, Jr in 1933.

All Graves asked for when when requesting the watch was that Patek Philippe create “the most complicated watch ever made.”

And that, they did. While the SuperComplication has since been surpassed in number of complications by the Calibre 89, the 24 complications included in this watch were an insane amount for the time.

Adding to the legend, and price, of the watch is the fact that it was a result of a competition between Graves and his friend James Ward Packard, to see who could own the nicest watch on the planet.

The story behind this watch, coupled with its elaborate design and complications, helped it to sell for $24.1 million at auction a few years ago.
