5 Most Expensive Cars Sold at Auction

By on February 5, 2015

Luxury cars are some of the most expensive items that money can buy these days. Top of the line sports cars like the Bugatti Veyron sell for figures just north of $2 million in 2015, representing the price of the best new car that you could possibly purchase.

But for all the splendor and decadence of Bugattis, Lamborghinis, Bentleys, and so forth, new cars are not nearly the most expensive automobiles you can own.

If you want a really expensive car, you have to take a glimpse into the past, as luxury race cars of decades past tend to sell for prices that make Bugatti Veyrons look downright affordable. Due to the rarity of these vehicles, owning one is much more difficult than getting your hands on a car that embodies contemporary luxury.

Here are the five most expensive cars ever sold at auction. All of these vehicles put even the most expensive cars of the modern era to shame, fetching prices that amount to entire fleets of today’s nicest luxury vehicles.

#5: 1954 Ferrari 375-Plus Spider Competizione – $18.4 million

In 2014, this antique, vintage Ferrari race car sold for $18.4 million at auction at England’s Bonham’s auction house.

The old-school race car features a 4.9-liter, V-8 engine, and was used in numerous races in Italy and the United States, and was actually run down to the point of being barely functional before being revamped and fixed up to virtual mint-condition for its auction.

Included in the auction with the car were several spare parts, including a second, custom engine, should the installed engine encounter any problems.

The 1954 Ferrari 375-Plus Spider Competizione has an extensive history in racing, and was one of the most highly-regarded early race cars in the world, as it earned the nickname “Le Monstre” from French competitors who feared going up against the car.

Le Monstre commanded a monstrous price at auction, and is certainly the prized possession of the man who won the bidding war.
