5 Most Expensive Cars Sold at Auction

By on February 5, 2015

#2: 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 – $29,607,760

At a Bonham’s car auction in 2013, this 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 set what was then the world record for a car sale at nearly thirty million dollars…and amazingly, the record was not held by Ferrari (although it is, once again – more on that in a minute).

The 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 is an antique, Formula 1 single-seat race car from a bygone era of auto engineering.

The car’s decorated racing history included many Formula 1 wins in the ’50s and ’60s, including being driven by famed Formula 1 driver Juan Manuel Fangio in several of his notable victories.

At the time of its sale, this 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 shattered three world records: the most expensive Mercedes-Benz ever sold, the most expensive Formula 1 car ever sold, and of course, the most expensive car ever sold, period.

This incredible car still holds 2 of those records, but is no longer the most expensive car of all-time, as you will see below.

#1: 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO – $38.1 million

In a 2014 Bonham’s auction in Monterey, California, a new world record for most expensive car ever sold was set by this 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, with a final sale price of $38.1 million, which was actually about $10 million LESS than many experts were predicting it would go for. Some estimates had valued the car at a price above $50 million.

This Ferrari set the world record for a number of reasons, but perhaps none was more important than the fact that only 39 units of this antique race car were ever produced, making it one of the most rare vehicles on earth. How many of those 39 cars are still around and in working condition today is a matter of speculation.

This was the first and only 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO to go to a public auction, and as a result, a bidding war took place that culminated in the nearly $40 million, world-record sale.

With the new bar set by this car, you can be sure that more luxury antiques will be auctioned off in the coming years to try to break this new world record.
