The 10 Most Expensive College Degrees in America

By on April 7, 2015

#3: Columbia University – $254,000 for a 4-Year Degree

Another college in New York, another Ivy League University, and another 4-year cost that’s over $250,000. Columbia is one of the world’s most venerable universities, and while a degree from the school is a valuable commodity, that piece of paper costs students approximately $63,500 per year.

Columbia is located in New York City and was founded in 1754, making it one of the oldest schools in the United States. With an undergraduate enrollment of around 8,300, Columbia is the home for many of the country’s brightest young minds. U.S. News ranked Columbia as the 4th best school in the country in the most recent rankings, tied with the aforementioned University of Chicago.

An Ivy League education is something which every ambitious young person desires, but when you need to spend $254,000 to earn your 4-year degree, Columbia can be a little cost prohibitive.

#2: Harvey Mudd College – $258,000 for a 4-Year Degree

Harvey Mudd College is the third entry on this list from the Claremont Colleges (See: Scripps and Claremont McKenna), and the most expensive. A 4-year degree from Harvey Mudd will cost you, on average, $258,000, with students reporting an annual cost of approximately $64,500 per year.

While Harvey Mudd does cost an insane amount to attend, it recently received the distinction of having the best return on investment of any college in America. Despite its massive initial cost, Harvey Mudd graduates are guaranteed some of the highest starting salaries and lifetime earning potential of any schools in the world.

This is because Harvey Mudd is very specialized towards careers in math, science, and engineering, and the school’s students are instructed in a way that prepares them for demanding (and high paying) careers in these fields.

Ranked #15 in the U.S. News rankings for liberal arts colleges, Harvey Mudd ranks much higher than that for mathematics and sciences. If you want an absolutely elite degree in one of these disciplines, though, getting it at Harvey Mudd is very expensive.
