5 Most Expensive Watches Ever Sold

By on February 3, 2015

Luxury watches are a popular, expensive status symbol for many affluent men and women. Even in the age of smartphones and computers, where knowing the time is easier than ever, the watch remains a factor.

While watches are no longer the easiest, or even most accurate, way to tell the time, they are still popular fashion accessories.

Wearing a nice watch on your wrist or in your pocket is often a symbol of class, wealth, and sophistication. Even if you’re not a watch fan yourself, odds are that you notice when somebody is rockin’ a particularly nice timepiece.

While even the wealthiest of people rarely spend more than a couple tens of thousands of dollars on watches, the nicest watches ever made have prices that soar well into the million-dollar and above range, providing a sort of luxury that’s unattainable for most of us.

These 5 watches give a whole new meaning to what a luxury watch really is. Prepare to be absolutely dazzled.

#5: Greubel Forsey Art Piece 1 – $1.6 million

Unveiled in 2013, it didn’t take long for the Greubel Forsey Art Piece 1 to reach the upper echelon of ultra-luxury watches.

Acclaimed watchmakers Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey teamed up with famed miniature artist Willard Wigan to create this one-of-a-king timepiece, which sold for $1.6 million.

This incredibly unique piece is highlighted by a tiny “nanosculpture” in the watch’s crown (the part of the watch used to wind the hands), produced by Mr. Wigan. This minuscule sculpture of a sailboat is visually enhanced by a microscopic glass coating, allowing the wearer or an admiring friend to take in the beauty of the piece.

But the Greubel Forsey Art Piece 1 has many other things going on that add to its million dollar-plus value.

The Greubel Forsey Art Piece 1 also features a 30° inclined double tourbillon – a gravity-countering spinning gear system – which ensures that the watch is incredibly accurate in addition to being incredibly beautiful.
